Marion has a background in computer programming, and after the last of her four children went to school, in IT support in education at various levels. She was elected as a parent governor and was later an OFSTED lay inspector for 11 years. In 2004 she became involved in patient representation as a member of the CPPIH Patient Forum at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, which continues as the Patient Group. She has been a lay member of the Research Ethics Committee there since 2006, and also contributes patient views to other medical groups. Her other interests include foreign travel, mountain walking and her six grandchildren.
