Robert Smith is on the specialist register as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon. His surgical practice specialises in lower limb surgery, principally treating foot and ankle conditions with a particular focus on ankle arthritis and ankle replacement surgery. Mr Smith also treats knee arthritis and performs arthroscopic knee and ankle surgery. Smith qualified from Manchester Medical School in 1994 and undertook junior doctor posts in the Greater Manchester area. He subsequently acquired a training post in trauma and orthopaedic surgery in the North West where he completed his general orthopaedic training taking a particular interest in surgery to the lower limb. In the latter part of his training he worked in various fellowship posts focusing on lower limb joint replacement, and foot and ankle surgery. Through one of these fellowships, which involved working with Mr Wood at Wrightington Hospital, Mr Smith developed a particular interest in ankle replacement and ankle and hindfoot arthritis. In July 2006, Mr Smith was appointed as a locum consultant lower limb surgeon at Wrightington Hospital and subsequently a substantive consultant in trauma and orthopaedics at Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust. Mr Smith has performed research in the past on knee CT scans; trauma resuscitation; ankle fusion surgery; the current situation in ankle replacement; Game Ready System (a combination of Intermittent Compression with Circumferential Cold Therapy) in post op recovery of knee replacement.
